We were recently made aware of Opal through a connection within the recruitment industry, in relation to an issue we had with a client we had recently placed with in Shrewsbury.

To cut a long story short, the candidate we placed as a permanent member of this company decided after three weeks the role was not for them, and that the role was not as the client sold to them, and therefore decided to leave. With the invoice still due for payment, it left us in a tricky position. Upon taking the vacancy to work, we had laid out our terms of business to the client, detailing our payment terms, reduction of our terms, etc.

Having worked the vacancy for the best part of a month, with the candidate also being with the company for the best part of a month. We rightly felt our fee was still payable. Especially if the role was not turning out as expected for the candidate – The client didn’t and we hit a road block.

We put in a call to Opal and were directed to Robert, we discussed the situation, he explained how he works and how he could help. He asked to view all correspondence in relation to the vacancy, CV submission, terms emails, interview confirmations, etc.

After review he informed us that he could help and asked for our permission to contact the client to attempt to retrieve our fee. Within a week we had our fee paid and were happy to pay for the services offered by Opal. We probably would not have received anything had we not reached out to them.

As a business, we realised we had been naïve to not have a proper process in place to deal with such situations.

After this, and taking advice from Robert, we decided to pay for a full review of our company terms of business, how we email clients when agreeing terms, using correct wording, etc. Filtering this information down across the business has placed us in a strong position moving forward to ensure future disputes will not leave us out of pocket.
